Bariloche

Day 6 - Bariloche

Bariloche

Tuesday, 27 August 2013

We had a great day today exploring the Argentinian Lake District. We spent the bulk of the day in the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Our local guide, Diago, was fantastic. He talked us through all of the different areas in the National Park.

We had a look around Guiterrez Lake and we stopped for a short break for the toilet and coffees. Some spectacular views. There was a beautiful hotel lakeside that is now privately owned. People used to travel along the lake by boat to the hotel and meet up with the bus to continue the journey. Unfortunately, the hotel has increased prices and it is no longer viable for tour operators to use this service. The government is looking at developing the area nearby.

We then continued our journey across the mountains to Mascardi Lake. Here we stopped for lunch at Pampa Linda just short of Mt Tronador and its many glaciers. This was the highlight of the day, even though it was raining. Tronador means thunder and the mountain did not let is down. As parts of the glaciers move and crack, the resulting sound is just like thunder. Ventisquero Negro, the glacier we visited is known for its dark brown colour due to the dirt and sediment it has picked up.

Upon our return to Bariloche, we had some time to wander around the town and explore the chocolate shops. Mehta better way to end a busy day!
