Phnom Penh

We arrived in Phnom Penh at around 915 this morning. We spent a good 20 minutes driving out of the airport for a total distance of about 100 metres. We spent the morning at the Cambodian Museum with out local guide, Mr T. He showed us around and filled us in on all of the treasures in the museum. No photos allowed inside the museum unfortunately.

Our next stop was the Genocide Museum. We met one of the survivors of this place of torture. One of the things that I found astounding was that a high school, a place of education, was turned into a prison and torture camp. It was a very emotional place to visit. People were taken from their homes to be 'educated' and they were tortured until they confessed to being a spy of some sort. 19,440 mass graves were found across the country after the regime was ousted. I still find it hard to believe that the people responsible for this lost power in 1979 and to this day, some of them have still yet to be tried for the crimes they have committed.

On a lighter note, we did go to see the King's palace after lunch which I must say was spectacular. It was from one extreme to the other. Once again, no photos inside.

Within the grounds we visited the Silver Pagoda which was pretty spectacular. Once again, no photos inside.

The final place we looked at while in the grounds was the Elephant Stables.

We then went to Penh's mountain to look at one more temple. Amazing! The whole city can be seen from this place.

We returned to the hotel and grabbed a tuk tuk to the river front. Sam, our driver, took us down, waited for us while we wandered around and then took us on a tour of the city. The Casino, Australian Embassy, Palace and the like. Driving around is amazing. People are so relaxed. The traffic just keeps on moving and everyone slots in. I don't think I would be able to drive in it......Belinda did make me laugh asking if we could put 5 in a tuk tuk. If they can sit 4 or 5 on a motor bike/scooter, then why not!!!

We finished of the night with dinner in the hotel. An excellent last day in Cambodia. A few more things to see in the morning before we head off to the airport and leave for Vietnam.
